Task 1 C806 1 .docx C806 Task 1: Pharmacological Principles Introduction to Pharmacology – C806 Western Governors University A1. There are four stages of the drug cycle. The first stage is absorption. This is how the medication gets into the bloodstream from where it was given. How a medication is administered will determine how quickly it is absorbed. (Watkins, 2014) There are three ways a medication can be given. Enterally is one of them and in this way the medication is given into the GI tract by oral, rectum or a tube. (Watkins, 2014) The second way is parenterally which is by injection. The last way a medication can be given is percutaneously. This is given as an inhalant, under the tongue, or topically. (Watkins, 2014) The second stage of the drug cycle is distribution. This is how the medication travels to the needed place in the body after the medication has been absorbed. (Watkins, 2014) Knowing which place in the body needs the medication will help how quickly it can help the person. The third stage of the drug cycle is metabolism. The liver, kidneys, and intestines are used to break down the medication and change it too less active or inactive so they can leave the body. (Watkins, 2014) The liver does most of this work. The fourth stage of the drug cycle is excretion. This is an important stage because it prevents waste products from building up in the body and causing a person to become sick. (Watkins, 2014) The kidneys help discharge the medication.
