Cardiovascular System Structures PDF Attached C1. Basic process of the respiratory system. The respiratory system is made up of two main parts, the upper and lower respiratory tracts. The upper portion of the respiratory tract is composed of the mouth, nose, and pharynx. The lower section contains the trachea, bronchial tree, and the alveoli. The main role of the respiratory system is to preform the process of respiration which is commonly referred to as breathing. Furthermore, respiration can be divided into stages including inhalation and exhalation. Inhalation is when air (O2) enters the lungs and exhalation is when we force the air (CO2) out of the lungs. Respiration begins with inhalation, which allows the diaphragm and the external intercostal muscles to contact each other increasing the surface volume of the thorax. As this occurs the chest cavity is expanding which lowers the pressure on the inside of the cavity. As oxygen in brought into the lungs the pressure of the cavity is forced into lower pleural spaces of the chest. The oxygen that is entering to expand the lungs is doing so via nasal or oral cavities that are covered by mucous membranes that are lining the upper airway. The oxygen then passes the pharynx which is composed of the nasopharynx, oropharynx and the laryngopharynx.
