She has been residing there since the passing of her husband. After evaluations and tests, the EKG revealed a heart attack. Jamilah also has severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and adult onset of diabetes-mellitus. The Emergency Room physician started Jamilah on anticoagulants and consulted cardiology while waiting to reach her emergency contact Bashir, Jamilahs youngest son. Jamilah emigrated to the U.S. with her husband and children more than 40 years ago, even though she was highly educated in Turkey as a trained lawyer. Jamilah was a homemaker and only learned basic English, which made communication with the physicians difficult; her children however were all fluent in English. The family retained a lot of the Turkish cultural values and norms, which included the sons being patriarchs of the family. Bashir has informed the medical team that he is the decision maker; since his mother does not have an Advanced Directive on file, his wish is to have a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) with no intervention of any kind, other than comfort care. Because of the family request, the DNR order and the patients other comorbidities, the consulted cardiologist decided to manage the patient medically.
