These incidents are one of the leading causes of injury and death in the geriatric population. Falls can lead to fall related injuries, such as subdural hematomas or broken hips. Falls tend to occur for multiple reasons, such as poor eyesight and hearing, medications, chronic health problems, and general aging. Falls can have devasting and lasting negative effects on the patients, their loved ones, and the healthcare team involved in the treatment. Significance of the problem Falls in older adults can cause a plethora of problems. They can lead to lengthened hospital stays, which increase medical costs to the parties involved, both the person who fell and the hospital. There may be a need for short or long-term disability, new medications for the victim to take as a result of the fall, and cost in time and resources from doctors appointments, and physical therapy. For a patient that has experienced a fall, they can also lead to an increased fear of falling, which can decrease the patients drive to be involved in their own health, impact activities related to daily living, and reduce interaction with others. The result of this fear can lead to an increased rate of depression and a feeling of hopelessness, as well as morbidity and mortality.
