Athabasca University Introduction It is possible to understand society's prevailing and dominant values by carefully analyzing how the media represent matters. The societal pattern of values is usually reflected in the media (Cheryan, Plaut, Handron & Hudson, 2013). How sexes and gender issues are viewed in society is largely influenced by the media. Due to the ubiquity of the media, such issues are woven throughout people's daily lives. As a result, messages and information disseminated by the media permeate into the people's consciousness at all times (Lauzen, Dozier & Horan, 2008). The majority of these messages and information pass as stereotypical, confining, and absurd perceptions of the sexes. The representation of women in the media has been deliberately exaggerated or, in some cases, unintentionally, from actual circumstances (Cheryan et al., 2013). This paper will analyze how women are represented in the media and how it affects the societal view of women with attention to the workplace treatment of women. The first section of the research will discuss how the media propels the stereotypical perception of women. The next section of the research will present a concise review of relevant studies on the topic.
