Spanish conquistadors named the country El Salvador which translates to “the Savior. Before the Spanish conquest, Pipil Indians consumed the land. However, in the early 1900s a General by the name of Maximilio Hernandez Martinez used his power to rid the country of the Pipil Indians. He killed tens of thousands of Indian residents. Those that were lucky enough to survive the massacre (often referred to as la Matanza in Spanish) began to hide their Indian culture and identity in fear of being killed because if it. Therefore, most Pipil languages and dialects died off with many of their people. Instead, Spanish became the preferred language. Maximilio Hernandez Martinez lead a series of very brutal and heinous wars in El Salvador. In the 1980s, there was a civil war. Because of the wars and utter social chaos, many fled to the United States. In fact, Between 1980 and 1990 there was an eightfold increase of El Salvadoreans living in the United States (from 94,000 to 701,000). Today, more than 1.8 million reside here.
