Communicable Disease Article_ Thrasher.docx Communicable Disease Article HCS/457 Herpes Infection Herpes refers to a disease caused by the herpes simplex virus, also referred to as HSV. The virus mostly affects the anal region, external genitalia, and mucosal surfaces, among other parts on the skin. The infection is a long-term condition, but most people do not show symptoms despite have infected by the virus (Whitley & Roizman, 2012). For instance, according to the health care reports, statistically, in a group of five, one has genital herpes in the United States. However, out of this proportion of infected people, it is reported that only 10% are aware of their disease (Whitley & Roizman, 2012). The reason for not realizing the presence of the virus in an individual's body is that most people have mild signs and symptoms that cannot be recognized. Additionally, such symptoms can be mistaken for other diseases, or the person can be a victim of the infection but never show any signs. HSV-1 is mostly contracted through general interactions like kissing, sharing lip balm, sharing utensils with the infected person. The most affected group of people, especially in the US, is 48 and below, whereby 67% of the entire population suffers from HSV-1 (Whitley & Roizman, 2012). If these people have oral sex and that during sex, they had cold sores, then they can get genital herpes.
