ELM/534 Date Instructor Checklist for Evaluating Books Children™s literature entertains, teaches, opens a child™s imagination, improves the advancement of language skills and critical thinking that supports the infrastructure of learning. The content of children™s literature and the messages delivered should give children appreciation of their culture and the culture of others. To know what children should be reading or listening to when you read, you first need to know the child™s background, prior knowledge, likes, dislikes and learning styles. Next, select age appropriate books that mirrors the children, their families and the school and has windows that show appreciation for diversity and culture. Book Selection The first aspect of my check list is to discover what are the interests of the child. When students are learning something that is relevant to them, they pay closer attention. The child will process the information more efficiently and engage in critical thinking, making connections between old and new knowledge (Vacca, 2018).
