American Public University System.docx American Public University System In 1978, Ford Motor Company agreed to recall 1.5 million Ford Pinto and 30,000 Mercury Bobcat sedan and hatchback models d... ue to the fuel tank design that made the vehicle susceptible to fire if there was to be a collision towards the rear of the vehicle. The president at the time was Lee Lacocca. He was the one to introduce the concept of the pinto in order to compete with sub-compact European vehicles. The design of the vehicle as well as the manufacturing of the vehicle seemed to have been rushed into production in the eyes of the consumers. Ford launched the Pinto in 1971 to compete with german and Japanese compact cars. Fully aware of the faulty fuel tank that often ruptured during impact resulting in death, Lacocca decided that the production of the vehicle will continue because the process is too far along and it will be an expensive recall. Usually it take four plus months to manufacture a vehicle, however, the Pinto only took two years. The Pinto was only weighed 2000 pounds and cost 2000 The fuel tank in the pinto was susceptible to cause a fatal fire if its in direct contact in result of an accident. A couple reasons the fuel tank was a key component in getting the recall in 1978 was because it had a short filler tube that pulls out, it had a weak bumper which usually cave in crushing the fuel tank upon impact and the fuel tank was too close to the rear perimeter of the vehicle.
