Born to a wealthy family, Nightingale went ahead to pursue nursing, which at the time was regarded as a career for low-class members of society and largely reserved for men. However, with her endless desire to serve, she went against her familys advice and societys norms to join the nursing profession and become one of the best contributors to improved public health standards in Britain, India, and the world at large. That said, Nightingales first major contribution to public health manifested in her role in initiating nursing education programs (Beck, 2010). Determined to improve nurses efficiency in handling patients and addressing patients health concerns, Nightingale saw a great need for her to improve the quality of education that nurses received in preparation for their nursing roles. Secondly, by leveraging her work for poor law and workhouse reform of the 1860s, Nightingale played an instrumental role in developing nursing and care protocols for the sick poor at homes and in workhouses (Karimi & Alavi, 2015).
