While leaders and their teams build the reputations of their corporations through high productivity, trust, and good deeds showed toward their stakeholders while satisfying the competitive demands of the marketplace, it is also true that laws and regulations set standards for acceptable and unacceptable business practices and behaviors (Weiss, 2014, p. 201). Equifax had many instances that they were not compliant and could have possibly avoided this breach in 2017 or limit the number of customers that were affected. Equifax had already had many instances where hackers were able to get into sensitive information within Equifax. In 2015, a “technical error†ostensibly caused by software modifications publicly exposed consumer information. In 2016, another incident exposed the salary and tax data of 431,000 employees at Equifax client Kroger (Data Breach at Equifax, 2019). In December 2016, an independent researcher discovered that Equifax had left consumer information exposed on a website accessible to any internet user (apparently intended for employees only) (Data Breach at Equifax, 2019).
