MSN FP6218 1 1.docx MSN-FP6218 Change Proposal Summary Report Leading the Future of Health Care Proposing Evidence-Based Change Executive Summary Proposed Change A system proposal for the state of Minnesota is to mandate nurse to patient ratios in long term care. There is currently no mandate and in some facilities one nurse may have up to 30 residents to manage. The nurse may feel overwhelmed and unable to care for multiple residents at one time. These residents may be experiencing a change of condition to which the nurse must prioritize the needs of the residents and the other clinical duties. Residents of long-term care (LTC) facilities deserve to have care delivered timely. The U.S. Office of the Inspector General that 60% of adverse events at nursing home were linked to inadequate monitoring and/or substandard or delayed treatment by nursing staff (Sofer, 2017). This can only be done by reducing the number of residents the nurse is assigned by mandating limits. If the site has a transitional care TCU unit; it should have a lower nurse to patient ratio; as a patient on the (TCU) requires more assessment and intervention, then a stable LTC patient. Desired Outcomes The desired outcome is to have a safe nurse to patient ratio appropriate to facility census, acuity, and licensure.
