The challenges discussed are providing safe and ethical care during patient boarding in the emergency department, the effect of caregiver fatigue and burnout on patient care and caring for patients during an ongoing nursing shortage. Discussed will be the problems and a possible intervention to overcome each challenge. Also discussed will be the Institute of Medicines 2010 Future of Nursing report key message number three, regarding nurses being full partners with physicians and other health professions to redesign American healthcare. An explanation as to why this is important to the nursing profession will be given. This paper will also explain the Institute of Medicines five core competencies and how nursing practice can meet each of these and overcome obstacles that could be creating a barrier to achievement.
