Often times patient come in with varying complaint such as changes in their reasoning, mood, interest, feelings and behavior, which is totally different from what it used to be. They often complain of feeling of sadness, depressed mood, loss of interest in their hobbies, low energy, poor performance in work and activities of daily living and sometimes suicidal thought. In a situation where the PMHNP is fully in charge of the facility, especially in a state where NPs are granted full practice authority, it is imperative to understand and notice the early cues of the patient that is suggestive of possible depressive disorder. This will help the NP in appropriate diagnosis, early intervention, initiation of treatment or referral if need be. Therefore PMHNP needs to prepare themselves to function as the captain in health care organizations, with or without full practice authority, as independent practice may be granted to them at any time, proper and early preparation to assume the role is the key (Barton Associates, 2019).
