wk3assgn Nurs6053.docx Nurs 6053 Developing Organizational Policies and Practices Walden University Nurs 6053 In the state of Louisiana, there have been substantial cuts in mental health services. In 2016 the state's Medicaid program was expanding, insuring 430,000 more people in Louisiana; however, there continues to be a deficit in the number of providers accepting Medicaid due to low reimbursements. Sixty percent of United States counties do not have a single practicing psychiatrist (Mental Health by the Numbers, 2019). This paper aims to discuss the mental health disparity in rural areas, especially in Louisiana. The competing needs that may affect mental health services Healthcare costs are steadily increasing for consumers, yet there are not enough mental health professionals to meet patients' needs suffering from mental illnesses. Two competing factors are the lack of resources to pay psychiatrists and mental health nurse practitioners to treat patients and the lack of access to outpatient mental health treatment in rural areas. Many mental health professionals prefer to work in urban areas due to inadequate resources, professional isolation, lack of a multidisciplinary care team, and perceived lower professional growth opportunities (Chandra, 2020). Integrated care would be an idea for rural areas. Integrated care enhances patient outcomes, decreases reimbursement issues, improves employee productivity, enhances employee satisfaction, and diminishes costs (Chandra, 2020).
