The nurses get the ... patient into a room to evaluate. Under the doctors orders they begin running tests such as EKGs, blood tests, and responsiveness. The patient is suspected of having an abdominal aortic aneurism. The doctor deems that the patient needs emergency surgery STAT. The doctor asks the nurses if the patient came in with a family or friends. Nurse responds, â€œNo, he came in alone via ambulance, was found unconscious on the sidewalk by a citizen, unresponsiveâ€. The nurse checks the computer for further information and sees an address but no emergency contact or next of kin, no DNR, no POLST documentation and the patient is a Jehovahs witness. Patient is currently in surgery and loosing a lot of blood. A nurse comes in with results from blood tests done in the ER and hemoglobin level is 4.8. Doctor immediately orders 3 units of blood to be transfused to the patient. The dilemma in this situation is surgery has already started to help save this patients life. During the surgery they get more details about the patient and find out the patient is a Jehovahs witness. Knowing this does the doctor continue to save this mans life? Does the nurse helping the doctor find out that the patient is a Jehovahs witness and tell the doctor?
