NR505_Wk7_EBP_Assigment.docx Evidence-based Practice Project Proposal Chamberlain University Nursing Practice Concern/Problem Childhood obesity is a global epidemic.Last year there were 38 million children reported as overweight or obese (WHO, 2020). The Covid-19 pandemic may increase these numbers because of quarantine; increased screen time due to home schooling; no scheduled outside time or PE classes; and change in dietary habits while not in school for prolonged periods (Ao, 2020). The prevalence for obesity increases with age: age 2-5 is 13.9%, age 6-11 is 18.4%, and age 12-19 is 20.6% (Skinner, Ravanbakht, Skelton, Perrin, & Armstrong, 2018). The healthcare costs are increased for these patients due to prescriptions, emergency room visits, and O/P visits that are on average $19,000 more than a child within the normal weight range (Smith, Egan, Montano, Dawson-McClure, Schoffman, Larson, & St. George, 2018). Just a one percent decrease in childhood obesity can lessen the total number of obese adults by 52,821 and cut the overall lifetime medical costs by $586.3 million (Cagle, 2016). There is a much greater risk of premature death and an astounding number of 2.8 million people die every year due to complications of obesity (WHO, 2020). Children that are overweight are more likely to be obese as an adult. The risks for comorbidities such as HTN, hyperlipidemia, T2DM, CVD, sleep apnea, and joint problems increase along with the financial burden of healthcare costs.
