The Institute of Medicine is demanding the nursing profession to practice at the highest level. Advanced practitioners are finding themselves independent of physicians, diagnosing, prescribing medications, and treating sick patients with complex modalities. Advanced Practitioners can be classified into four roles: certified nurse practitioner (CNP), clinical nurse specialist(CNS), certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), and certified nurse-midwife (CNM)(DeNisco & Barker, 2016). The transition for registered nurse (RN) to nurse practitioner (NP) is a life-changing transition; the transition can be difficult and stressful. There is a shift from experienced bedside nurse, often expert level, to an inexperienced status in the NP role transition. The inexperienced NP has a loss of identity, loss of confidence, and impaired NP role development. Successful NP role development is essential for the NP to become proficient and a significant provider (Barnes, 2015). Certified Nurse Practitioner The nurse practitioner role began its journey in the late 1800s, with Lillian Wald's nurses.
