Self-regulation consists of stopping and analytically thinking about the judgment that is being made before making a decision or reacting to a situation. System-One and System-Two There are two systems that individuals use when making decisions. System-1 thinking is the immediate and quick reaction and thought process. This kind of thinking is having instant and automatic reactive responses that does not require any effort. While this kind of thinking can be life-saving, it can lead to a less favorable outcome in some occasions because a “spur of the moment” reaction does not exactly get completely thought through and may not be the most reasonable. An example of this that I will use is when my friends and I go paintballing. Say I am running across the field to get to a different covered spot. The opposing team will obviously start firing off rounds and I see a paintball flying towards my mask, I will automatically duck to avoid getting hit. System-2 thinking is just the opposite of one. It is used when making effortful, logical, slow, and conscious decisions. As a type one diabetic, I use this kind of thinking every day. I check my blood sugar 15-20 minutes prior to eating.
