There many activities here being to share photos and stories about their experiences in life. A survey conducted in 2018 (Anderson & Jiang, 2018) indicates that adolescents can make new friends through social media as it allows them to connect socially. However, many ills are associated with social media use among teenagers, especially depression that may result from bullying or lack of sleep. This paper will look at the effect of social media obsession among adolescents. Contemporary issue and the external stressors with social media According to Twenge, Martin & Campbell, (2018), many adolescents use social media. The figures put it at 45% of adolescents being online constantly, and 44% of them are online from time to time in a day. Experts believe that although social media is a good platform to connect, some side effects are experienced, especially people feeling worse. About 25% of all adolescents believe that social media has negative effects (Twenge et al., 2018). Statistics show that among the adolescents of the age 12-19 years, 13% of them have reported cases of depression while 32% of them have reported cases of anxiety, thus resulting in the issues of social media being a case of mental illness for adolescents (Twenge et al., 2019).
