Healthcare Associated Infections, known as HAI, occur when a patient gets an infection while they are being treated for a different condition. These infections can occur in any facility including hospitals, surgical centers, dialysis clinics, and long-term care facilities. There were an estimated 687,000 HAIs in U.S. acute care hospitals in 2015. About 72,000 hospital patients with HAIs died during their hospitalizations (Data Portal, 2020). The most controversial part of HAI is that they are preventable. In order to decrease the number of Hospital Acquired Infection cases, all stakeholders must be held responsible for their part in the prevention of these types of infections. The number one thing that all staff, patients and visitors can do to prevent infection is hand hygiene. Proper and frequent hand washing, or hand sanitation is critical in preventing infection. Physicians, nurses and other direct patient care staff treat multiple patients, one after another, being exposed to various different illness and diseases. Patients are clearly aware of the fact that they are ill, otherwise they would not be in the hospital, it is their responsibility to protect themselves and others by following their physicians orders and practicing good hygiene.
