Although cancer treatment has come a... long way, there is still much to be done. The American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute are two national organizations with a mission to research, educate, and support those with a cancer diagnosis, with an ongoing goal is to eradicate cancer. The purpose of this paper is to discuss an overview of the cancer diagnosis, treatment, and supports available. A summary of how the nursing process is applied to a patient with a cancer diagnosis is outlined. Nurses who are educated in critical thinking and the scientific facts, are better prepared to support and serve those who need us. Diagnosis and Staging of Cancer The history of the staging system began in Germany when Steinthal begin to stage breast cancer. In 1944, Pierre Denoix staged cancers using a Tumor, Node, and Metastasis system. In 1954, an international committee studied his staging validity. A few years later the International Union Against Cancer and the American Joint Committee for Cancer Staging and End Results Reporting, met to further discuss staging. In 1976, the USA organized the National Conference on Cancer Staging. Since then seven editions were updated, and predictability and prognosis accuracy have improved.
