The Impact of Divorce on Adolescents In the society of today, divorce has become commonplace in households across the United States and around the world. It is during divorce that many adolescents are faced with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and increased misbehavior. It is crucial that therapists make themselves aware of the myriad of issues that divorce can cause as well as effective strategies for helping adolescents to cope with those issues. Through implementing these strategies, adolescents can learn new ways to cope with issues brought on from the divorce. Socioemotional Change Developmental psychologist Erik Erikson posed the argument that confusing identity and role can cause a crisis within adolescents (Kail & Cavanaugh,2016). This time in the life of an adolescent is when self and personal identity are sought by exploration of beliefs, goals, and personal values. Independence begins to be gained and more value is placed on peer relationships as opposed to family. G. Stanley Hall introduced the term “storm and stress,†which explained reasons why a teen may exhibit resistance and rebellion.
