Major_substance_abuse_essay.docx(1) PCN-100 Benchmark- Major Substance of Abuse PCN-100: Foundations of Addiction and Substance Use Disorders Benchmark- Major Substance of Abuse Since the begin... ning, Americans have abused substances to escape their reality. Drugs, in the beginning, were portrayed as something positive, and use was even encouraged. œTobacco was called œthe enchanted herb. alcohol was called œgood creature of God. Cocaine was labeled a miracle drug (Films Media Group, 1993). Americans were unaware of the level of addiction and abuse that came with these substances, and shortly after, heroin, morphine, opium, and cannabis were readily available for over-the-counter use. Addiction has since affected approximately 32 million Americans (James & Gilliland, 2005). Alcohol, prescription opioids, and amphetamines are three major substances abused; some substances are more addictive than others and can lead to physical addiction, tolerance, and withdrawal. Alcohol is one of the most abused substances in the United States. œIn 2018, it was estimated that 139.8 million of Americans aged 12 or older were current alcohol users (NSDUH, 2018). Alcohol is classified as a depressant, and the main ingredient in alcohol is ethanol. Ethanol is very toxic to the body, and abuse can lead to numerous health issues. The body™s main organ that filters ethanol through the system is the liver (Doweiko, 2015). Young adults who do not fully understand how ethanol metabolizes through the body can lead to over intox. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . .. .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . .
