Task_Force_Paper_.docx(1) Task Force to Study School Attendance at Gould™s Elementary School State University Spring To: Cynthia Passmore, Goulds Elementary School Principal From: Hildaura Vence, Faculty Member Date: xxxxxx Re: Task Force to Explore School Attendance at Gould™s Elementary According to data released by the U.S Department of Education™s Office for Civil Rights, on average 8 million students from across all states in every grade level miss three or more weeks of school (Attendance Works, 2018). Missing days, let alone almost a month, of instruction leaves students at a disadvantage when it comes to their academic performance. A study by Thomas and Higbee (2000) linked student attendance with high grades. If there is a positive connection between attendance and good grades but students do not come to the schoolhouse, instructing them and helping them to succeed academically becomes a very difficult challenge. Over recent years, Goulds Elementary has struggled with chronic absenteeism. Repeated tardy and absent students have unfortunately become something that we deal with on a regular basis. This year, with the COVID 19 pandemic and over 60% of the student body opting to attend school virtually, the attendance problem has grown even bigger. After checking the school data reports I noticed that there are over 45 students with more than 30 absences and 39 students with between 15 to 20 absences.
