Wrongful_Convictions_.pdf(1) JUS-202HN Wrongful Convictions Being convicted of a crime is a life-changing thing that can leave someone stunted later on in life, let alone being convicted for a crime that someone else committed. Law enforcement and the justice system do their best to keep the innocent out of jail and the criminals in jail, but it is not a perfect system. Wrongful convictions are not obsolete in the justice system. A wrongful conviction is when a suspect is convicted and sentenced when they were not the culprit. This can happen due to the eyewitness making a mistake in identifying the culprit and tunnel vision on the police officers™ part (Gould & Leon, 2010). An erroneous conviction can happen from any of these things easily. Eyewitnesses are not always the most reliable because when present during a crime, they typically focus on the item that can do them harm, often a gun or a knife, they do not take in details of the perpetrator. The victim gets a quick glimpse and then the criminal is gone. Tunnel vision can also play a big role in the occurrence of false convictions. Police officers, when building a case, can become convinced the suspect is guilty and end up ignoring other pieces of evidence that point away. They become so focused on that suspect that they suppress other information. Wrongful convictions leave the public™s safety at risk and it allows for the true culprit to run about ramped committing more crimes (Gould & Leo, 2010).
