As a whole, biodiversity is incredibly important to an ecosystem, because it helps to maintain that ever so delicate balance between plant and animal species, as well as being something that we humans are completely reliant on. Without proper biodiversity, many jobs would be on the verge of collapse or elimination, such as farmers or fishermen, whose lives depend on successful biodiversity in order to keep on making a living. Not to mention activities such as bird watching, camping or hiking, tourist activities that also make money off of biodiversity (Importance of Biodiversity, 2018). The first explanation ties into the inherent view on diversity, which means that all organisms have a right to thrive, and we should encourage this by allowing for biodiversity to keep growing. The second explanation comes from the utilitarian view on biodiversity, explaining the in-depth relationship man has with it. The discussion in this paper regarding biodiversity focuses primarily on how genetically modified organisms (GMOs) work with and against biodiversity, and what this spells for our future.
