Growing up, my four-mile radius was safe, and I could play until after the streetlights came on. œOut Stickney what everyone called my neighborhood was my œvillage, I literally had a grandmother, uncle or aunt on every street. Over time, my œvillage started diminishing, my elders were dying. In lieu of all the open housing, renters started moving in; then came the gangs and the drug houses. It was no longer safe œOut Stickney. As an adult, I visit my old neighborhood. It looks nothing like it used to; run down and neglected. ShotSpotters are posted in a four-mile section of the North End and if you know whats good for you, youre in your home after dark. Shootings can happen anywhere; unfortunately, many happen in Toledo's North End [ CITATION Sho19 \l 1033 ]. Toledos neighborhoods need to be safer. To make them safer, Toledos police department needs several things: more police officers and better information about when and where gun violence is happening [CITATION The191 \l 1033 ]. In the last couple of years, homicide rates have been high in Toledo. In 2020, there was a 61% increase in homicides with 50 of them being homicides by gunshot, breaking the record of 60 set back in 1980 [ CITATION Per20 \l 1033 ]; nationally, homicide rates jumped by 30% [ CITATION Pag21 \l 1033 ].
