Understanding when to use a WBS or Gantt chart, or both is critical to the success of the project completion. The work breakdown structure or WBS is the core of project planning and breaks down what you are building for the projects into smaller components. A Gantt chart is used to control the schedule and is created from a WBS. It tracks specific tasks over a period if tine. So with that being said, a WBS shows what is being done and a Gantt chart shows when it is being done. The WBS is the foundation of a project. It helps to identify the tasks that need to be done to complete a project. It organizes and designs the total project by laying out in a hierarchal form a list of larger jobs and the smaller jobs it takes to complete the larger jobs. Creating a WBS helps to provide structure by listing all project work. Leaders are better able to assess the scope of the work needed to get the job done.
