Without proper care or protection ants will quickly access resources through nearly any hole in a structure, this is especially true if they have established a colony within. Ants are easily attracted by a myriad of chemicals which give off a œsmell to them, as they forage and attempt to gather, they leave trails to guide others, especially in rich resource environments. Ants are most notably attracted to sugar rich foods, such as candies, sugar itself, and even fruit juice if it has been sitting. However, ants are omnivores and can consume almost anything in their path, that means they can also find and use resources such as meat, cheese, and milk. Ants also favor carbohydrate rich foods that can be easily broken down, like crackers, pastas or dry rice. As much as food is a strong motivator for ants to move closer, there are other things within the environment that may attract them. Ants can collect near areas with moisture and warmth, which means they may find pipes, electrical appliances and outlets, heaters and other items that provide one or a combination of these factors. Additionally, ants have flora preferences that may entice them more as well, such as roses, hosta plant, carapa trees and cascade knotweed.
