C228Task2.docx C228 Task 2 WGU 43888 C228 Task 2 Tuberculosis (TB) is a â€œcontagious, infectious disease, due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MT) that has been around for over 150 million yearsâ€ (Barberis, Bragazzi, Galluzzo, & Martin, 2017, p. 1), but it wasnt until March 24, 1882, when Dr. Robert Koch announced the discovery of MT. The statistics around TB are staggering. TB is one of the â€œtop 10 causes of death and the leading cause from a single infectious agent (above HIV/AIDS).â€ ("Tuberculosis," 2019, para. 1) There was an outbreak of TB in three rural counties of Minnesota in 2008 among Guatemalan immigrants to the US. It started in Guatemala, earlier than 2008 as Guatemala has an estimated TB incidence of 25/100,000 people. ("Guatemala TB," 2019) The index case in Minnesota in 2008 was a 6-month-old infant with Guatemalan parents and the presumed source of the infection was a Guatemalan male age 25 years. The 25yo male sang in a band and practiced at the infants home, so there was exposure in a confined space for hours. (Lowther et al., 2011) TB is highly infectious and contagious, but it is also curable and preventable. TB is spread through the air, which means if someone has TB, when they cough, speak or even breath, they are spreading the disease. There is also the possibility that people have TB but dont show signs of the illness yet. People who have become infected with TB have a 5-15% chance of developing symptoms of TB.
