The community that I performed my field project in was the small rural community of Hickman County Tennessee. The county seat for this community is Centerville, Tennessee. Hickman County is part of the Nashville–Davidson–Murfreesboro–Franklin, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hickman County is surrounded by Dickson County on the North, Williamson County on the East, Lewis County on the South, and Perry County on the West side. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 613 square miles (1,590 km2), of which 612 square miles (1,590 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) (0.02%) is water. The Duck River, the Piney River, and many creeks, large and small, run through Hickman County. ("United States Census Bureau ", 2010) Early in the 19th century this community was known for furnace manufacturing due to the abundance of its supply of top-rated natural iron ore. Population per square mile as of the census taken in 2010 was approximately 40.3 which has not changed very much since that census ("United States Census Bureau ", 2010). There are no higher education facilities in this county such as Colleges or Tech Schools but there are several classes to help those in need to get a GED.
