C301 Task 1.docx Translational Research for Practice and Populations C301 Task 1 Western Governors University Translational Research for Practice and Populations A.Nursing Practice Identification The nursing practice change I have identified in my healthcare organization is the standardization of skin-to-skin care in stable premature neonates. A1. Current Practice Description Current practice in my organization for care of premature infants involves mostly invasive measures that affect the maternal infant bond and increase the cost of their overall care. These measures include, but are not limited to, use of incubators to help with thermoregulation, intravenous or oral glucose supplementation for glucoregulation, and nutritional supplementation via feeding tube. These not only increase the cost of care for the patient and family, but the use of specialized equipment and the training for the staff to be able to use that equipment causes an increased financial burden for the organization. It also affects the bond between infant and mother and can lead to decreased patient satisfaction and poor health outcomes. A2. Why Practice Needs to Change One of the top causes of infant mortality worldwide is complications from prematurity. Premature infants face many challenges including inability to thermo and glucoregulate, low birthweight, decreased cardiorespiratory stability, and immunocompromisation. Skin-to-skin care is shown to help infants to thermo and glucoregulate, and also help. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . .. .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . .
