Those include active listening, validation, empathetic reasoning, reassurance, transitions, guided questioning, partnering, nonverbal communication, empowering the patient, and summarization (Bickley, 2017). Interviews need to be non-threatening and face to face. Open-ended questions need to be used so the patient can elaborate on their answers.  Active Listening Active listening is listening carefully to what someone is saying. It also includes paying close attention to nonverbal behaviors. Active listening is not just a series of questions, but also includes being sensitive to the patient's feelings. When actively listening to a patient, the nurse must not rush from one question to another. The nurse must focus on what the patient is saying in response to each question and not just the task at hand (Bickley, 2017). Using active listening is required when interviewing a patient.
