C426 Task 1.docx C426 Healthcare Values & Ethics Task 1: Ethical Dilemma A1: Potential Ethical Dilemmas Jamilah Shah was brought to the hospital following a heart attack and fall at the extended... care facility (ECF) where she lives. She is 90 years old and suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and adult-onset diabetes mellitus. Jamilah is a widow and mother of three sons, the family moved over from Turkey, where she was educated as a lawyer, but can only speak basic English. Her sons are all adults and speak English fluently, and the family retains their Turkish culture and tradition of patriarchy. The youngest son, Bashir, was listed by the ECF as her emergency contact and he informs the care team that he will be making all the decisions for Jamilahs care. The family has requested only comfort care, and thus the cardiology consultant has concluded that Jamilah will not receive cardiac catheterization or be considered for bypass surgery. Jamilahs social worker has raised concerns, stating that in private the patient had asked for help, and that she wanted to live. The social worker believes that the relationship between the mother and her sons seem unsupportive. Without intervention, Jamilah will die within days. An ethical dilemma of autonomy arises in the above scenario; the right of the patient to either accept or refuse what care they receive.
