Make Your Bed ENG280 Week 2.doc Eng280 Make_Your_Bed_ English 280 In a commanding voice reserved for those in authority, topped with passion and sprinkled with experience Admiral William McRaven delivered the University of Texas™s 2014 commencement speech. Admiral McRaven outlined ten small ways to make significant changes in the world. His use of all three modes of rhetoric: pathos, logos, and ethos gave way to a speech that will withstand time. In 2014 the Admiral, a highly decorated Navy soldier with thirty-seven years of service, was approved for retirement. The life lessons he shares at the closing of his career to those in the audience at the start of theirs are priceless. Pathos, logos, and ethos make the Admiral™s speech inspiring, authoritative and passionate. McRaven™s use of rhetoric encourages all who hear it to go out and change the world starting today. The ribbons on the chest of Admiral McRaven introduce ethos before the commencement address begins. Not only is the list of his achievements great, but his knowledge also surpasses most of his peers. Ethos is the ability to persuade the reader based on the credentials of the writer. Admiral McRaven™s use of his own life experiences with the Navy Seals showed the hardships and trials that he experienced, endearing him to his audience. He consistently proved authoritative through his stories, such as going through six months of training meant to weed out the weak. In this speech, logos is evident in the Admiral™s sto. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . .. .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . .
