Compassion fatigue causes caregivers to feel stressed, worried, and even feel the need to avoid situations or patients (Bush, 2009). Burnout is a more severe condition that causes fatigue, anger, and even adverse reactions towards patients and coworkers (A caregiver™s guide to coping with stress and burnout, n.d.). Preventative self-care is a way to preserve one™s health and avoid both compassion fatigue and burnout and is also necessary for personal development (Bush, 2009). To cope with compassion fatigue and burnout, one needs to add a few extra steps in their routine. In the article How to cope with compassion fatigue: 8 tips for caregivers, there are eight tips listed to help prevent this condition (2018). The most important tip is to be aware of one™s levels of compassion by taking time to reflect on personal stresses and feelings (2018). Another major tip is the importance of self-care. Self-care is regularly exercising, eating a well-balanced diet, getting into a healthy sleeping pattern, taking time to spend alone in meditation, and especially knowing when to ask for help (2018). Quality of life is impacted for patients by the quality of mental, physical, and spiritual health of their caregiver.
