C128_Task_3.docx C128 Ethical Challenges Title of Paper Western Governors University This paper is about ethical dilemmas and a model used to evaluate, examine, and justify a final decision. The importance of advocating for the patient and how challenging that can be will be discussed. A common legal issue that can occur from the decisions and actions taken whether intended or not will be presented. Ethical Challenges A common ethical challenge is a patient requests the healthcare team not to notify family members of the patient™s admission or condition. As healthcare professionals, we have to acknowledge and follow HIPAA rules and regulations. When the patient is of sound mind, has no (Power of Attorney) POA, and makes the request not to notify the family of their condition the healthcare team must respect the wishes of the patient. Myself it is hard not to talk to family members and let them know what is going on as I feel that they should know. As a professional, I have to put my own beliefs and feelings aside follow the ANA™s code of ethics provision three and HIPAA laws stating that patient information must remain private.
