MSN FP 6021 Assessment 2.docx MSN_FP_6021 Self-Management of Type 2 Diabetes Capella University Biopsychosocial Concepts for Advanced Nursing Practice I Change Strategy and Implementation Int... roduction A handful of patients often present with metabolic symptoms when their blood glucose is uncontrolled. Diabetes Mellitus is the biggest cause for these imbalances. Patients that present with these issues, usually require a lot of education to help manage these symptoms at home. Treatments include the use of insulin, hypoglycemic agents, and overall management. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas in response to blood sugar rising and allows blood sugar into the cells of your body, which is then used for energy. In patients with type 2 diabetes. This is a disease process that doesn™t have a cure, but it can be well managed as long as patients are aware of what to look out for (Type 2 Diabetes, n.d.). One method of diabetes management is blood sugar testing. This step is important because blood sugars may rise and get too high or may get too low. Each end of that spectrum can pose a dangerous risk for the patient. Hyperglycemia is when the blood sugar is above 250mg/dL and hypoglycemia is when the blood sugar falls below 70mg/dL. Hyperglycemia can present as increased thirst, increased appetite, nausea, vomiting, weakness, fatigue. Hypoglycemia can present as cold, clammy skin, numbness of the fingers and toes, unsteady gait, blurred vision, and coma (Lewis, Dirksen, Heitkemper, & Bucher, 2014) C. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . .. .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . .
