Professional Roles and Values 1.docx Professional Roles and Values: Task 1 Western Governors University Nursing Theory The nursing theory that has influenced my values and goals the most is one started by Florence Nightingale. Florence was one of the first nursing theorist in nursing. She started the idea of a maintaining a clean environment had better outcomes than those that did not. Nurses since have used nightingales theory in day to day practices and developed a standardized way of nursing. For example, in nursing school they teach all nurses how to do specific tasks in nursing to standardize care based on newest evidenced based practice. We were taught how to properly make a hospital bed, wash our hands effectively, bathe our patients, place a catheter, etc. We were taught these skills the same way to ensure excellent nursing practices. These practices were started and improved following this theory. This theory fits into my practice every day. In the morning, every patient is bathed, and their room is serviced by the housekeeper. As the nurse, I ensure the bedside table is clean and their bed is freshly made. I have noticed through my years of nursing that people really feel better when they are clean and the environment around them is clean.
