The Indiana nursing standard of practice that best fits this situation is â€œMaintain each patient/clients right to privacy by protecting confidential information unless obligated by law to disclose the informationâ€ (Indiana Code 25-23-1, 2013). This nursing standard of practice also refers to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards and regulations. Implications The nurse in this case study did not follow this specific nursing standard of practice for Indiana. For example, the nurse went to dinner in the cafeteria where nurses from the medical-surgical unit were eating. While feeling guilty about the situation with her patient Mr. E, she started to tell the other nurses about the situation. She wanted to know what she should do about Mr. E. While doing this, she gave away very specific confidential patient information to people that did not need to know anything about him. Any nurse that is going to practice in the state of Indiana has to abide by this rule of protecting confidential patient information. There was not any reason why this nurse would need to give up any specific confidential information in order to get advice from other staff members.
