The Merriam-Webster dictionary (2014) defines professionalism as "the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person.†It takes many qualities to become professional in the workplace such as character, attitude, competency and conduct. It sounds really easy to be professional in the workplace but obviously its not since there are pages upon pages of tools, skills and definitions on how to be professional. Out of all of the qualities in professionalism, character is probably the biggest one because according to The Free Dictionary (2014), character is “the combination of traits and qualities distinguishing the individual nature of a person or thing; the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.†Its often used to describe someone like, “He has good character,†meaning he was honest and had good morals. Character consists of someone taking responsibility, maintaining accountability and arriving on time and not leaving early. It also means that you will admit and correct mistakes made, be fair and truthful and follow through on commitments.
