Social Media Risks to Patient Information The term “social media†generally refers to Internet-based tools that allow people to communicate by sharing information, messages or images, and any other content. Sharing of elements related to client care details and personal health information with the public raises potential concerns about the professional, ethical, and legal ramifications of such accounts and their related users (Kerr, Booth, and Jackson, 2020). The posting of patient information does not have to include the patients name to be considered a breach of personal health information. It is possible that enough information could be posted that a person could identify the individual being posted about causing a breach of PHI.
