PSY7540__Unit_6_Assignment_.doc PSY 7540 Course Project Topic Selection Capella University Introduction The focus of this paper is on the field of clinical counseling in Asian Americans. This paper will assess the common cultural norms within Asian Americans and mental health. Furthermore, the purpose of this paper is to learn more about counseling techniques and intervention strategies that will work best with Asian American culture. Mental health-seeking behaviors are rarely identified in Asian Americans due to the stigma and shame associated with mental health problems. Many other barriers exist preventing Asian Americans from accessing the mental health or social supports they need. This paper will address appropriate, culturally sensitive manners to provide effective clinical counseling treatments for Asian Americans. Research Question To seek cultural differences and norms within Asian American culture in comparison to Western culture in the field of mental health. To discover barriers preventing Asian Americans from accessing mental health and social supports while finding methods to break those barriers. Lastly, to discover counseling techniques, approaches, and intervention strategies that will be most effective in treating mental health concerns experienced by Asian Americans.
