PSY7625 u09a1.doc PSY7625 Data Analysis and Application Capella University Data Analysis and Application The Chi-square is intended to extend how likely it is that an observed distribution is due to chance (Warner, 2013). Warner purports that chi-sure is also known as the goodness of fit statistic as it measures how well the observed distribution of data fits with the distribution that is expected if the variables are independent. The author went on to mention that a chi-square is known to analyze categorical data. Specifically, this means that the data has been counted and divided into categories that provide a statistical test concerning the arrangement of frequencies (numbers of observations) over two or more categories (Warner, 2013). This statistical test compares observed and expected values to see if they are discrepant (Howell, 2011). Research indicates that a large chi-square represents a poor level of agreement between observed and expected frequencies. In addition, the most common use of this test is to assess whether the observed cell frequencies that would be expected if group membership on the row and column variables in a contingency table were related.
