Over the years many theories have been proposed to explain behaviors but not just one theory can explain all behaviors. Human beings are so complex and there are many factors that shape a person into who they can eventually or do become. Some can be biological, psychological, or even social factors. Perhaps a combination of all three. Rational choice theory is one of four theories I will be discussing. Rational choice theory was originally developed by Cesare Beccaria. This theory states that criminals compare the risks with the benefits of committing a crime. If the benefits outweigh the risks, a criminal will pursue that criminal act. They will intentionally commit a crime. Rational choice criminals usually take a lot into consideration when thinking of committing a crime. They think about the potential benefits, what is gained and how will it benefit them? They think about the risk, what security is present or is there police around? They can think about the targets and the availability of their target, is it easily accessible? Can they get away or escape? The punishment can weigh in pretty heavy as well, what will happen if they are caught, is it worth the risk?
