I could not find a locally run crisis hotline that uses volunteers, even after punching in my zip code to a crisis volunteer guide.Ironically, though. In Hawaii, suicide is the most common cause of fatal injuries among residents, outpacing car crashes, homicide, poisoning and drowning. It is estimated that one suicide is committed every two days in Hawaii. (Danielson, 2015). So, in outlining the process for becoming a crisis hotline volunteer, I went to the website HealthyPlace.com. This site shows how, according to The Trevor Project, a crisis helpline for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth, to become a crisis hotline volunteer who answers phones. The process includes: I.Attending an organization orientation. II.Submitting an application. III. Getting an interview. IV.Getting a background check. (This may involve personal references as well as a criminal background check.) V.Completing the training.
