The question I hope to answer is if leadership is a characteristic, is it a process, or is it both? According to Northouse (2018), leadership is valued and highly desired. From personal experience and observation, I have found leadership to be something many desire to have and have an admiration for those possessing the leadership qualities they seek to possess. We will examine my personal definition of leadership, along with information related to leadership from other peer-reviewed writings. Personal Definition of Leadership My personal definition of leadership is evolving through experience and education. When I started out as a young professional, I believed leadership to be based on a title or a group of decision-makers. I believed someone in an executive role was a leader solely based on the title regardless of their ability to lead. I also was under the impression that leadership was a trait that certain people had, and others didn't. As of present, I believe leadership is not limited to a position or person of authority. As my thoughts have evolved with education and experience, I have come to the realization that leadership is a process versus a characteristic or trait.
