It is important to know what kind of controls are needed for any given environment. For that, it is necessary to develop an in-depth strategy to determine how best to implement these controls. Once these controls have been implemented according to strategy, it is necessary to properly test them to gauge their effectiveness. Then, the results are to be analyzed and the controls and implementation strategy revised if necessary. This paper aims to discuss the difference between perimeter and internal controls, what constitutes and defense-in-depth strategy, and how these security controls are tested and verified. To begin with, it is important to understand the difference between perimeter controls and internal controls. For a physical space, a perimeter control would include such examples as fences, walls, barbed or concertina wire, and fiber optic cables to name a few.
