IT213_UNIT4.docx Unit 4 Assignment Purdue Global University Software development dates back to the 1830s, “One of the earliest designs for a programmable machine (computer) came from a man named Charles Babbage way back in 1834†(Wang, 2008). A man named Charles Babbage built an analytical machine, this machine could perform many tasks that used punch cards fed into a machine. “anyone could reprogram the machine by simply changing the number on the punch card†(Wang, 2008). Ada Lovelace was the first known computer programmer. She programmed a machine to calculate Bernoulli numbers. According to Dr. Betty Toole, “This plan, is now regarded as the first “computer program.†(Toolen.d). The united states created the first computer in 1943, so the first computer program did not come out until another 100 years. You had to physically rewire this computer and turn switches on and off to successfully program it. No longer having to reprogram a computer physically, machine language soon replaced that process. Machine language used two numbers, 1 and 0 to program machines. The 0 means to switch off and the 1 means to switch on. We soon moved away from machine language; binary is the language that all computers speak because it was just complicated and was always prone to errors. The next programming language was Assembly language; it allowed you to tell the computer what you wanted it to do and how to do it.
